BIG SKY holidays

Montana

US Rockies

IN A NUTSHELL

Big Sky is America's 3rd largest ski area.
Its a massive mind-bending, quad-searing mountain for real skiers, but it boasts wide, empty cruisers too.

Big Sky SKI RESORT

Tucked away in the pristine Montana wilderness lies the awesome Big Sky ski resort on the doorstep of Yellowstone National Park. Big Sky Ski Resort stands out as a truly premier ski destination, boasting 5,850 acres of skiable terrain, state-of-the-art lifts with heated seats, and legendary powder - averaging 400 inches of snowfall annually. The mountain’s terrain is split almost evenly between beginner and advanced runs, making it ideal for skiers of all abilities.

But there’s plenty for non-skiers to enjoy in Big Sky. Explore snow-covered forests on guided snowshoe tours, take a thrilling dog sled ride, go snowmobiling through breathtaking mountain landscapes, or unwind with a soak at nearby natural hot springs. Wildlife safaris, winter sleigh rides, ice climbing, and spa days round out the options for off-slope adventure and relaxation.

Dining options are as varied as the activities. On-mountain, you’ll find favorites like Montana Jack for hearty burgers and southwestern fare, Vista Hall with multiple fast-casual vendors, and Carabiner for après-ski cocktails. Yeti Dogs tempts with gourmet hot dogs, while the Summit Hotel features Peaks Restaurant for upscale dinners with a view. In the village and nearby town, don’t miss local spots such as Riverhouse BBQ & Events or Horn & Cantle, offering everything from slow-smoked meats to Montana-inspired fine dining.

Big Sky blends world-class skiing, adventure-filled non-skiing activities, and a vibrant dining scene for an unforgettable Montana getaway.

Why is Big Sky resort considered one of the best ski resorts in the US?

Details like 400 inches of annual snowfall or 3 mountains with lots of elbow room. Lift lines are basically non-existent here. The skiing and riding at Big Sky is the ultimate experience. Explore the backcountry on snowshoes or take a relaxing sleigh ride. The choice, like Big Sky itself, is all yours. With 320 marked runs reaching up to the summit of Lone Peak at 11,166 feet, skiers and snowboarders have their pick of everything from scenic cruisers to expert chutes and terrain parks.

With the Lone Peak Pass lift ticket, you can access 5,850 skiable acres and endless ways to navigate 4,350 feet of vertical drop. At 11,166 feet it's easy to see Lone Peak's appeal to every age and level of skier and boarder. Runs up to six miles long and glades and bowls make a day on the slopes something different for everyone.

WHAT IS THE SKIING LIKE AT BIG SKY?

Big Sky Resort in Montana is renowned for its vast, diverse terrain—spanning from gentle greens for beginners to some of North America’s most daunting expert in-bounds descents. Here’s what you can expect for each ability level:

Beginners
Terrain & Areas: About 15% of Big Sky’s expansive terrain is dedicated to beginners, with wide, uncrowded green runs and ample learning zones.
Best Zones: The Mountain Village base has magic carpets and easy poma lifts for absolute beginners; once ready, the Explorer and Southern Comfort lifts access long, gentle runs like Mr. K, Chet’s Knob, and the Southern Comfort zone.
Moonlight Basin: Offers an entire area of green trails—between Pony Express and Derringer lifts—with very low crowds, making it a top pick for families and new skiers.
Learning Support: Highly regarded ski school programs for all ages, as well as convenient terrain design that keeps novices away from steeper traffic.
Experience: Beginners find Big Sky welcoming, with smooth progression from learning slopes to longer runs amid incredible Montana scenery.

Intermediates
Terrain Spread: Intermediates have access to about 25–33% of the mountain (over 1,400acres!), with an endless assortment of blue “cruisers,” glades, rolling groomers, and lightly moguled pitches.
Notable Runs: Favourites include Upper Morningstar, Calamity Jane, Sunlight, and Africa (ideal for practicing skills), plus scenic cruisers like Lookout Ridge in Moonlight Basin.
Distribution: Blue runs are found all over—much of Andesite Mountain, large areas of Lone Peak’s lower flanks, and Moonlight Basin—offering variety, amazing views, and room to explore.
Progression: You can warm up on mellow blues and move to more challenging lines as skills improve. Mountain tours help new visitors find the best terrain.

Advanced & Expert
World Class: Over 40% of Big Sky’s terrain is advanced or expert (plus 18% rated true expert), including powder-filled bowls, steep chutes, moguls, glades, and some of the most challenging in-bounds terrain in North America.
Signature Terrain: The Lone Peak Tram provides access to iconic double black runs, couloirs, cliffs, and big open faces—such as Liberty Bowl, Dictator Chutes, and Big Couloir. These areas are regularly ranked among the best advanced ski zones worldwide.
Snow & Challenge: With over 400in of yearly snowfall and enormous vertical (4,350ft), advanced skiers find nearly limitless challenge both on and off-piste, including excellent hike-to and sidecountry opportunities.
Freeride & Variety: The resort also has extensive glade skiing, off-piste expert terrain, and multiple terrain parks for all freestyle abilities.
